There are many misconceptions about the current state of “psychedelic-assisted therapy.” At Denver Emotional Health, we offer legal psychedelic-assisted and/or psychedelic-informed therapy, including for individuals and couples. To learn more about how we can help you treat psychospiritual issues with psychedelic-informed therapy, or utilize certain legal substances such as cannabis-assisted psychotherapy to treat treatment-resistant disorders such as depression, anxiety, trauma and OCD-related disorders, please contact us today.

Psychedelic-Informed & Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy

One of the leading trailblazers of modern day psychedelic research and therapy has been Stanislav Grof M.D. He has stated, “there is an urgent need for a radical revision of our current concepts of the nature of consciousness and its relationship to matter and the brain.” This speaks directly to our need for psychedelic-assisted therapies, such as those utilizing cannabis or marijuana, to access non-ordinary states of consciousness for purposes of personal healing and growth. Whether you are someone who has experienced a spiritual emergence or psychospiritual issue, had some sort of “awakening,” or have issues that relate to non-ordinary and extreme states of consciousness, we may be able to help you.

Types of Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Treatments We Offer

  • Cannabis-Assisted Psychotherapy: Surprising to some, Cannabis (Weed, Marijuana, THC) is a medicinally useful tool in psychotherapy for personal growth and insight, as well as treating serious disorders such as depression, anxiety & Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. While most people are familiar with its use for recreational purposes, it has enormous capacity as a healing tool for both physical pain and mental health disorders when used properly to its full potential. In addition to its common use for treating physical or chronic pain, when used with conscious intention, cannabis can be used a psychotherapeutic facilitator to help amplify and clarify sensations, scratch beyond the surface of emotions and the root of our feelings and thoughts, all while simultaneously becoming more connected to a place of Self so we can notice and relax our defensive, protective parts. • Psilocybin/Medicinal Mushrooms & MDMA: Unfortunately, we live in a Country, State and County where these substances are deemed legal, and thus we cannot provide this type of therapeutic treatment. If you or a loved one has experienced a “bad trip,” or other psycho-spiritual issues as a result of taking these substances or a similar substance, we can help you with the process of psychedelic integration. Please feel free to contact us today to learn more about how we can provide psychedelic-integration and therapeutic services to help in you or your loved one’s mental health recovery.

What is a “Spiritual Emergence/Psychospiritual Issue” and How Can You Help?

The term “spiritual emergency” was first coined by Stanislav Grof. Generally, this means that someone is undergoing a psychological or spiritual crisis. This could entail symptoms that often look very strange to some, similar to what we call “psychosis” in certain situations, which could include visual and auditory hallucinations of sorts, strange and odd patterns of thinking, such as repetitive thoughts about “God” and the meaning of life or existence, as well as many many other issues.

Until someone is stable, the goal of working with clients in “spiritual emergencies” is to work towards the unfolding the latent meaning of the term, “emergence,” which really presents clients under our guidance an opportunity to emerge from the crisis and become whole — accessing and gaining a higher level of spiritual and psychological awareness, an expanded state of consciousness for the remainder of your life. For many people, these are the beginning stages of a deeper, inner transformation that have stemmed from unfortunate, “bad trips,” or other extremely stressful/traumatic or near-death experiences.

What is the “Treatment” for These Issues?

Currently, the prevailing treatment in the medical/therapy field is to pathologize these issues without second-thought. Many doctors, psychologist, therapists, and others, will deem someone “crazy” or that they are “losing their mind,” and attempt to force a variety of psychotropic medications onto the person with the hope that it will “eliminate” their symptoms. Unfortunately, this is a path of treatment that has been proven to be ineffective for most individuals. Although there is no doubt that some people benefit from anti-psychotic medication, such as those suffering from schizophrenia, schizoaffective and/or bipolar disorders, and those who are suffering from what is known as a “substance-induced psychotic disorder,” a spiritual emergence is very distinct. At Denver Emotional Health, we support psychiatric medication for all clients who feel they need it, and we believe that many benefit in both the short-term and long-term. However, when it comes to psychospiritual issues, medications may not be as helpful given the nature of the issue.

The most difficult part in dealing with this type of issue is that that most doctors and psychologist or therapists are not familiar with the issues, and will misdiagnose and/or mistreat. The people who present with these issues find it to be one of, if not the most, intense and psychologically terrifying experiences of their life, and the reality remains that initially there often appears to be a thin line between spiritual emergence and psychosis; in fact, how one responds to these situations can often dictate whether they go down a path of recovery or further psychosis.

At Denver Emotional Health, we will help provide a full individualized assessment and evaluation of your symptoms, as well as your background and family history, to help determine the best course of treatment. For some, it requires psychedelic-informed integration, in addition to traditional therapies such as Internal Family Systems or Acceptance & Commitment Therapy. For others, it may require a combination of psychiatric medication in addition to traditional and/or non-traditional therapies.
