Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders

There are several types of obsessive-compulsive and related-disorders that we focus on treating at Denver Emotional Health. These disorders generally revolve around obsessions and/or compulsions. Obsessions are persistent thoughts that the person experiences as intrusive and unwanted, and compulsions (rituals) are acts taken to get rid of certain obsessive thoughts or feelings associated with those thoughts. They obsessions/fears are very distressing, and often very disturbing to the individual dealing with them, and the compulsions feel like an effective way to relieve symptoms.

We worked with the following types of obsessive-compulsive disorders:

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: A disorder compromised significantly of obsessions and/or compulsions. Obsessions are persistent thoughts, or even fears, that the person experiences as intrusive and unwanted. Compulsions or rituals are behaviors or mental acts performed in an attempt to get rid of or neutralize obsessive thoughts or feelings. These could include any number of repetitive behaviors that may become more consuming over time and debilitating to one’s daily life. Learn more about OCD.

Hoarding Disorder: A disorder characterized by the presence of clutter, difficulty discarding and/or excessive acquisition of objects, and significant distress or problems in one’s life as a result of their hoarding behavior and/or clutter. Hoarding is often a chronic condition that does not improve without treatment, and traditional supportive talk therapy is usually ineffective without more. Learn more about Hoarding Disorders.

“Body Focused” Repetitive Behaviors: Disorders that can be characterized by hair pulling (trichotillomania), skin picking (excoriation), nail biting and other similar behaviors. We practice exposure therapy as it is effective and then approach clients with an integrative approach to ensure the behaviors do not simply repeat in new ways later down the road. Let Us Treat your OCD or Related Disorder Effectively, for the Long-Run

OCD and Related Disorders do not respond to traditional talk therapy; in fact, it also appears true that “experts” who only engage in exposure therapy alone also will likely fail to treat OCD and related disorders. If you do your research, or have experienced certain supportive therapies or exposure therapy alone, you will likely find that your OCD symptoms will not go away in the long run, or go from one obsession or fear to the next, with just “facing your fear.” At Denver Emotional Health, we take an integrative approach combining the best of science, research-backed methods like Exposure Therapy, with mindfulness, process-based therapies such as Acceptance & Commitment Therapy and Internal Family Systems.
