What is “Bipolar Disorder?

Despite the increased attention to bipolar disorder over the recent years, there still remains a number of misconceptions about the diagnosis and treatment for it.

To begin with, bipolar disorder, what was formerly known as “manic depression,” can be broken down into several different categories within the diagnosis. This includes: Bipolar Disorder I, Bipolar Disorder II, and Cyclothymia. These disorders are similar in nature because they all contain the common symptom of having intense “mood swings” that can interfere significantly with daily activities and relationships in life. What separates these disorders is generally the intensity in range, and duration, of the mood swings. Some people with bipolar disorder may experience intense, prolonged periods of depression, as well as extended periods of mania or hypomania where a person may feel excessively energetic, or “wired”, and have a much decreased need for sleep than compared to normal, a distinct change in appetite, racing thoughts or fantastical ideas, and/or impulsive or reckless behaviors that may have destructive consequences.

We Know How to Treat Bipolar Disorder Effectively

We have a history of treating depression and bipolar disorder, and understand the ways in which it needs to be approached depending on the circumstances of the person. Eery person is unique, and bipolar treatment varies from person to person. Bipolar disorder is a very serious disorder, but it is possible to treat and maintain symptomology so it does not impact your life. Traditional, supportive talk therapy and anti-depressants may help with bipolar disorder, but those usually do not treat the root of the issues that may be present and/or be a long-standing alone. At Denver Emotional Health, we believe that it is important to manage symptoms of your bipolar disorder, but even more essential to heal any underlying trauma that may be present and impacting you concurrently, as this is misdiagnosed/mistreated in many presentations by traditional providers such as primary care physicians or “old-school” psychiatrists and psychologists.
