Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Occasional worry and even “existential” anxiety is an expected part of life. Anxiety can serve a purpose whether it’s to help motivate us to safety in uncertain situations, or inspire us to pursue a life worth living. The natural range of anxiety can vary person to person, but there is no doubt that some natural worry or fear before a big test, or before big decision at work, can stir up some anxiety. Unfortunately, for those who suffer from anxiety disorders, anxiety does not go away just because the ‘objective’ facts of the situation suggest it ‘should.’ For a person with clinically significant generalized anxiety, they will struggle with unnecessary or excessive worry, that may get worse over time despite the situation not fitting the facts always to themselves or others. These symptoms can become significant to the point where they interfere with daily activities such as job performance, school, work and relationships.
People with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) display excessive anxiety or worry, most days for at least 6 months, about a number of things such as personal health, work, social interactions, and everyday routine life circumstances. The fear and anxiety can cause significant problems in areas of their life, such as social interactions, school, and work. Specific generalized anxiety disorder symptoms include:
- Feeling restless, “keyed-up,” or on-edge
- Being easily fatigued
- Having difficulty concentrating; mind going blank or having ruminative (repetitive) thoughts.
- Being irritable/easily agitated
- Having muscle tension/physical sensations of “pits” in your stomach, chest or throat.
- Difficulty controlling feelings/thoughts of worry
- Having sleep problems, such as difficulty falling or staying asleep, restlessness, or unsatisfying sleep
